Afya and Elevate Destinations are committed to helping travelers make a powerful impact in the communities that they visit. We are working together to help bring critically-needed medical supplies to underserved hospitals and clinics throughout the world through Afya’s Luggage for Life program. Afya started the Luggage for Life program to help travelers bring supplies to our partner clinics and hospitals abroad; since 2011, travelers have brought over 13,000 lbs. of supplies to African, Latin American and Caribbean nations. This program perfectly aligns with Elevate Destination’s mission to empower conscientious travelers to become meaningfully engaged with the communities that they visit.

 

Q: How much does this cost?

We ask for a $125 donation for each duffel bag. This covers the cost of recovering the medical supplies, packing it at the Afya warehouse and shipping it you before you depart.

Q: How much time do you need to send me the supplies?

We ask that give us at least 14 days notice before you travel so that we have time to pack the supplies and make arrangements with our partners on the ground.

Q: What if I already know of a clinic on the ground where I want to bring supplies?

Great! Please fill out the form below to let us know where you’d like to bring the supplies. This will help us tailor the medical supplies to meet the specific needs of that clinic or hospital.

Q: What about customs? What am I actually carrying?

You will arrive at the airport with an orange Luggage for Life duffel bag holding 50-lbs. worth of medical supplies. Afya includes a customs clearance letter that you can use at airport security to check this bag.

Q: How do I get the supplies?

Afya staff will send you the Luggage for Life duffel bag and 50 lbs. of medical supplies prior to departure. We ask that travelers make a $125 donation for each bag to help Afya recover, pack and send the supplies.

Q: How do I get involved and deliver supplies?

When booking your trip with Elevate Destinations, let them know that you are interested in participating in the Luggage for Life program. They will let you know where you will deliver the supplies upon arrival. This will be planned as a component of your trip itinerary.

Q: Why is this necessary?

In many developing countries, hospitals and clinics do not have enough basic medical supplies to treat their patients. Doctors and nurses are forced to reuse supplies or not use sanitary measures, which puts patients at further risk for infection and illness. In the United States, we have a surplus of medical supplies so we work with healthcare centers here to recover this surplus and send it to our partners abroad.
