Afya provides an environmentally-sensitive, community-oriented solution to help address the critical shortage of medical supplies in underserved communities around the world.
Due to upgrades and stringent reuse protocols in the US healthcare system, over 7000 tons of usable medical supplies and equipment, including ventilators, wheelchairs, latex gloves, hospital beds and much more, are “wasted” every year. Unable to be used in the US, some $20 billion worth of medical supplies are sent to landfills at great cost to the American health care system and environment.
Afya sources medical supplies from hospitals, clinics, nursing homes and individuals with unused home hospice supplies.
Since 2008, Afya has rescued over 2000 metric tons of usable medical supplies worth over $26MM.
Between the US healthcare system, burdened with surplus medical supplies, and global health systems in dire need of those supplies are the hearts and hands of the Afya operation. Afya believes in the transformative power of service and welcomes ALL people with the capacity to give back and the desire to serve.
Every year, over 2500 volunteers donate a combined 20,000 hours of service to sort, inventory and pack recovered medical supplies. This creates a detailed database of inventory so Afya is able to customize shipments based on partners’ needs.
Afya volunteers come from local schools, religious groups, and community organizations that cater to special needs populations.
Afya volunteers are encouraged to know that their hands are the last ones to touch these critical, life-saving medical supplies before they are put to use by medical professionals in places of need. Every hour of service has a measurable impact on the lives of people in need!
GLOBAL HEALTH IMPACT
Quality health care is only as good as the practitioners and their tools. In the developing world, a critical shortage of medical supplies prevents health care professionals from doing their jobs. Imagine birth centers without sterile gloves and umbilical clamps; imagine hospitals with 1 ventilator for many patients. These are the urgent realities for countless underserved communities in the developing world. And then when disaster strikes, a community’s healthcare shortcomings are amplified dramatically – creating urgent new needs that Afya is equipped to address.
The lack of even basic healthcare supplies has a negative impact on health outcomes and results in an exodus of quality health practitioners from struggling healthcare systems – just where they’re needed most. It’s a vicious cycle that leads to unnecessary human suffering and death that is often preventable!
