DELIVER: GLOBAL HEALTH IMPACT
Many health systems in the developing world lack the medical supplies that are required to provide quality healthcare – even the most basic ones like sterile gloves and sutures. AFYA coordinates with hospitals, clinics, and care centers abroad to identify needs and deliver lifesaving supplies.
Here’s how Afya helped equip a medical center in Gabon, working in close partnership with the wonderful NGO, Global DIRT (Disaster Immediate Response Team).
The initial contact came via email from Dr. Glenn Castaneda, MD – the medical director at Global DIRT.
It’s been a while. I hope this email finds you well.
I just got back from working in Abuja Nigeria for 4 weeks and then came to Gabon and will be back in NY end of the month. I met a missionary here who built a building for a future medical clinic in Mouila but which is still completely empty.
I wanted to, as medical director of our NGO, help him finish the clinic and send medical teams to help run it.
Can you and your organization help us furnish it – exam tables, beds, exam lights, etc.?
Thanks and Happy New Year!
The dedicated team at AFYA sprang into action, coordinating with Dr. Castaneda on the specific items that would turn a new clinic building into a functional medical facility. The recipient organization – Mission Sainte Thérèse de l’Enfant Jésus – was instrumental in helping to craft the shipping list so they would be sure to receive only those items that were needed. The core work of the new health center would address the most pressing health needs in the community: Malaria, malnutrition, diarrhea, Respiratory tract infections, parasites, headaches, and backaches.
In addition to the core items, the container was filled with requested items, including but not limited to: biomedical diagnostic devices and treatment equipment, consumable/disposable medical supplies, surgical tools and supplies, orthopedic braces, maternal (OBGYN) and children’s health supplies, mattresses, durable medical furniture.
A full 20-foot shipping container with tens of thousands worth of medical supplies and equipment was shipped to Gabon on July 15, 2017. Our partners on the ground received, unloaded and ultimately set-up the clinic, with the first patients being treated on October 1, 2017.
We offer a hearty thank you to our DELIVERY partner, Global D.I.R.T., and especially Dr. Glenn Castaneda, for working with AFYA to deliver modern healthcare to a remote corner of the world.
