Yonkers, NY — July 28, 2026
On July 28, Afya partnered with the Yonkers Office for the Aging to distribute wheelchairs, walkers, shower chairs, and other mobility aids directly to local residents in need. No cost. No paperwork or wait times standing between people and the equipment they rely on. Welcome to Mobility Day.
The event comes at a critical moment. As Medicaid funding cuts put essential mobility equipment further out of reach for many older adults, the gap between need and access is widening. Afya is stepping in to close that gap, finding new ways to get durable medical equipment into the hands of the neighbors who need it most.
Occupational therapists were on-site throughout the event, working one-on-one with attendees to ensure each piece of equipment was properly fitted. The right walker or wheelchair only restores independence if it actually fits the person using it.
Westchester Is Home Base
Afya rescues surplus medical supplies and delivers them to communities around the world, and Westchester is where that work starts. Afya has brought this same model of direct, no-cost mobility support to elders across the boroughs of New York City, and Westchester is home base for that same commitment. Events like Mobility Day put equipment straight into neighbors’ hands, no cost, no red tape, with the same care and urgency Afya brings to every delivery, local or global.
Looking Ahead
The July 28 distribution is only the beginning. Afya is planning additional Mobility Day events in the months ahead, both in the boroughs of New York City and in Westchester County, bringing more equipment, more community partners, and more support to neighbors in every part of the region. Details will be announced in the coming weeks.
