Haiti Earthquake Recovery
On August 14 a 7.2 magnitude earthquake hit Haiti, so far killing 2,189 people and injuring more than 12,000. Afya is mobilizing to quickly send lifesaving supplies to medical teams on the ground in Haiti.
We are committed to supporting Haiti’s healthcare infrastructure and are asking providers in the south for their needs and delivering! Hospitals throughout the region are sending us their growing lists of supply needs and we are responding with shipments of PPE like gowns, face shields, gloves and masks; wound care supplies such as gauze, bandages, splints, stabilizers and sutures; and IV starter kits.
This earthquake was more powerful than the 2010 quake which killed 220,000 people. The Afya Foundation jumped into action then, sending 2 million pounds of lifesaving supplies and training Haitians in rehab medicine to support the thousands of Haitians who suffered traumatic amputations because of the quake. Now we are taking lessons learned after 6 years of work in Haiti to respond to the latest disaster.
We need volunteers to help us prepare supplies for shipment! Sign up on the volunteerhub.
