Helping Survivors of Apartheid in Cape Town, South Africa

AFYA Foundation

In April of 2019, the Afya team completed a site visit in South Africa in which we dialogued with Ikamva Labantu, a highly respected and impactful NGO in Cape Town. They lead health and medical personnel in community clinics and help older adults in their homes, living in Townships. Ikamva Labantu also tends to the youngest members of this community in need by providing early childhood education, meals and health care to the children who live in the townships.

South Africa is now struggling to contain the Coronavirus. This Wall Street Journal article details the crisis: Africa’s most developed economy now has confirmed 434,200 cases of Covid-19, the fifth-highest toll in the world behind the more-populous U.S., Brazil, India, and Russia. “The coronavirus storm has indeed arrived,” President Cyril Ramaphosa said. “As a country, we have never before faced such a severe crisis or such an abrupt disruption of our lives.”

Moving forward, Ikamva Labantu will be Afya’s onsite partner for the last-mile distribution of all humanitarian supplies, home-based medical supplies and durable medical equipment we deliver to the Cape Town Townships.

South Africa needs our help and supplies during this crisis.

With your generous assistance, we will significantly expand the scope, focus and impact of care by increasing access to requested PPE, durable medical equipment and supplies for both children and elders in the Cape Town Townships.

Afya needs to raise funds immediately in order to move our inventory in to the hands of those in needs. Ikamva Labantu also need a number of cleaning items that you can purchase and send to Afya at 140 Saw Mill River Road Yonkers, NY 10701. Donations of the following items will make a critical difference in protecting people who are implementing and participating in Ikamva Labantu’s programs:

  • Bars of soap (5,000 needed)
  • Paper towels (1,000 rolls needed)
  • Scrub brushes and toilet bowl brushes  (500 of each needed)
  • Wash cloths (10,000 needed)
  • Buckets (600 needed)

Afya can deliver these supplies via donated air transport.

With your generous assistance, we will significantly expand the scope, focus and impact of care by increasing access to requested PPE, durable medical equipment and supplies for both children and elders in the Cape Town Townships.

Please help us make this vitally needed shipment a reality and donate today.
