Westchester, Harlem FQHCs to receive donated supplies
The Afya Foundation, a Yonkers-based nonprofit that delivers medical supplies as part of global disaster-relief efforts, is making supplies available to federally qualified health centers in Westchester County and Harlem.
“I wanted to focus on the first line of triage,” said Afya’s founder and executive director, Danielle Butin. “They’re going to be delivering care to so many more people than they would [typically] be seeing in a week.
Founded in 2008, the nonprofit recovers medical supplies and equipment that would otherwise be discarded for distribution in areas that have shortages. It also collects donations of supplies from hospitals and delivers personal protective equipment to areas in need.
It is partnering with Hudson River Health Care in Peekskill, which will serve as a distribution point for FQHCs in Westchester. Afya is also sharing supplies with Harlem United, an FQHC with 25 sites that handled about 23,000 visits last year.
Harlem United has specifically requested equipment to assist its patients with walking, such as canes and crutches.
“If people can be safe in moving around, then they will be less likely to fall and have a medical incident that would drive them to care,” Butin said. —J.L.
