AFYA RESPONDS TO MAJOR DISASTERS WORLDWIDE, DELIVERING ESSENTIAL MEDICAL SUPPLIES TO SAVE LIVES
As disasters become more frequent and intense, the question is not if they will strike but when – and how we can help save lives and alleviate suffering.
About Afya’s Disaster Response Program
Since 2008, Afya has responded efficiently and effectively to disasters – natural and manmade – worldwide. We address medical and humanitarian needs through partnerships with local ministries of health and health care facilities.
Afya’s Disaster Response Fund
The Afya Disaster Response Fund supports our program to ensure that we can act quickly without the need to raise funds immediately in the wake of disaster, and that we can respond to disasters that may not make global headlines and where our support has critical impact. The Fund also allows Afya to preposition supplies with partners ahead of a disaster, and for the deployment of Afya staff to conduct assessments and collaborate with local health care providers.
During times of disaster, Afya activates its hospital network and strategic ally, the Greater New York Hospital Association (GNYHA). This enables Afya to swiftly collect and deliver critically needed medical supplies.
The Fund builds on our wealth of experience responding to crises as diverse as Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico, warzones like Ukraine and the Middle East, wildfires in Maui, and Cyclone Freddy in Malawi.
The January 2024 World Economic Forum reports how climate change is expected to cause an extra 14.5 million deaths over the next two decades. Floods could claim 8.5 million lives, with Asia-Pacific expected to be the worst-hit region. Droughts could lead to 3.2 million deaths and trigger huge health impacts, especially in children under five. Heatwaves could cause 1.6 million deaths.
THE TIME TO ACT IS NOW.
