Afya is responding to historic floods in southern Brazil that have left entire cities underwater, killing over 150 people and displacing 600,000, with 80,000 seeking refuge in overcrowded public shelters.
We partnered with the region’s only major hospital, Hospital Moinhos de Vento, to assess needs on the ground and be ready to deliver vital supplies to those affected. Each day, hospital staff treat 250 patients for surgeries and emergencies and an additional 1,000 people in shelters. But with limited resources and infrastructure—there are only two usable roads into the region, with one reserved for rescue efforts—the need for supplies is immense.
Afya is urgently mobilizing to airlift essential medical supplies and equipment to a region in dire need.
