Cap-Haitien Fuel Tanker Explosion

Haiti National Flag

On December 14, a fuel tank truck exploded in Cap-Haïtien, Haiti’s second-largest city. The damage is widespread.

An estimated 40 homes were destroyed, and the death toll currently sits at 66 but that number is expected to rise as the recovery effort continues. First-responders are lacking critical resources needed to respond and Haiti officials have issued an urgent appeal for medical aid. This all comes after 7.2 magnitude earthquake killed more than 2,000 people in August and the country continues to grapple with gang violence that emerged after the president’s assassination in July.

The Afya Foundation has over a decade of experience responding to crises like this one and a long history of work in Haiti.  We stepped in to provide aid in the aftermath of the earthquake earlier this year and we are returning to Northern Haiti to deliver needed supplies.
