Social Media Intern Reflections

Cara Kelley

What can a 16-year-old girl possibly do to help in the fight against a virus that people twice my age, with years of professional schooling and experience, can not overcome? Not much, I thought.

My friends and I have done our part to flatten the curve by staying home for the past few months. We are at an age where we crave social interaction but we knew we had to do the right thing.

When doing research, I came across a post on ideas for nonprofit blog posts and decided to write this one.

My friends and I have the privilege of being provided healthcare and good medical supplies, which not everyone has. Working with Afya this has become very clear to me.

My involvement with Afya Foundation has provided another outlet for me to help. As a social media intern it is my job to spread the word about this amazing non-profit organization in the hope that people will donate medical supplies or money.

Before the pandemic, Afya primarily collected unused medical supplies from New York hospitals and shipped them to places that desperately needed them.

When New York became the epicenter of Covid-19, Afya switched gears and donated thousands of supplies to local healthcare workers. PPE donations came from places like nail and beauty salons and auto repair shops and were sent to doctors and nurses and other healthcare workers.

Afya even sent masks to kids my age at homeless youth shelters. I am helping publicize these efforts which lead to more donations and maybe some saved lives.

It isn’t much but I’m proud of the little things I can do to help make the world a better place and I’m proud to be associated with Afya.

You never know how much of an impact one can make until you put forth effort and try. That is what I have done by working as an intern for Afya, and I am glad to be a part of it.
